Before Dark were a female R&B trio from the late 90’s\early 00’s that consisted of members Arike Rice (who was a member of another 90’s girl group, The Voices), her sister Jeni “Jeni G.” Rice Genzuk, and their cousin, Mia Lee.

In 1999, Before Dark released their first single, “Come Correct” which peaked at #93 on Billboard’s Hot R&B\Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart in February of that same year, staying on the chart for only 4 weeks, but failed to make the Hot 100. Their follow-up single, “Baby” featuring rapper Solé, missed the Billboard Hot 100 once again, but managed to peak at #48 on Billboard’s Hot R&B\Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart in June of 1999, staying on the chart for 9 weeks.

In 2000, Before Dark released their third single, “Monica” which managed to peak at #77 on the Billboard Hot 100, #22 on Billboard’s Rhythmic Top 40 chart, and #41 on Billboard’s Hot R&B\Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart in May of 2000, staying on the chart for 13 weeks, making it their highest chart apperance to date.

The trio was featured on the covers of “The Cheetah Girls” novels by Deborah Gregory and also appeared on Christina Aguilera’s “In Concert” tour.

During that same year, Before Dark’s debut album, “Daydreamin” was released. It was originally supposed to be released in 1999, but due to the low performance of the first two singles, RCA Records decided to delay their album. The album failed to make the charts and the group later disbanded.

Arike Rice continues to have an active career, dancing for musicians such as Usher, Kanye West, Janet Jackson, Jay-Z, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, Ciara, Missy Elliott, Fergie, The Black Eyed Peas, P. Diddy, Kelly Rowland, Amerie, and Ludacris. Arike also appeared in the films, “Hairspray,” “Dreamgirls,” and “Center Stage 2.”

Jeni works as a writer for the CW\BET television series, “The Game.” It’s unknown what Mia Lee is up to these days.
