B*Witched

B*Witched were an Irish girl group from the late 90’s\early 00’s who achieved success in the United Kingdom and the United States.

The original line-up consisted of twin sisters Edele & Keavy Lynch (born December 15, 1978), Sinead O’Carroll (born May 14, 1973), and Lindsay Armaou (born December 18, 1980).

B*Witched’s original group names were “D’Zire” and “Sister.” They had a tomboy image and in order to appeal to a younger audience, the group understated their ages during their early years.

Edele and Keavy’s brother, Shane (who is a member of Irish boyband, Boyzone) helped B*Witched find a manager who was Kim Glover (who was the former manager for New Kids on the Block). Kim signed the group to Glowworm Records, the label she had on Epic Records.

In the spring of 1998, B*Witched released their debut single, “C’est La Vie” which topped the UK Singles chart and became the 5th biggest selling single of 1998. The song also topped the charts in Ireland and New Zealand.

In the United States, the song peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it their highest chart appearance to date on the Hot 100.

/The song was featured in the Disney movies “Smart House” and “Life Size.” In 1999, the song was nominated for the “Best Song Musically & Lyrically” Ivor Novello songwriting award. B*Witched’s second single, “Rollercoaster” became their second #1 hit in the UK. “Rollercoaster” also topped the charts in New Zealand and Australia. In the US, the song peaked at #67 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On October 12, 1998, B*Witched’s self-titled debut album was released in the UK and released in the United States on March 16, 1999.

In the UK, the album peaked at #3 on the UK Albums chart and certified Double Platinum. In the United States, the album peaked at #12 on the Billboard 200 and certified Platinum.

The third single from their debut album, “To You I Belong” became their 3rd #1 hit single in the UK. The song was moderately successful in Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, and Sweden.

The last single from the album, “Blame it On the Weatherman” became their 4th #1 single in the UK, making B*Witched the first music act to have all four singles debut at the top of the charts in the UK.

B*Witched appeared on the ABBA tribute single, “Thank ABBA for the Music” which peaked at #4 on the UK Singles chart.

In 1999, Yaboom Toys made singing dolls of the group. They performed as the opening act on the *NSYNC tour along with Britney Spears. They were featured on the “Pokémon: The First Movie” soundtrack with the track, “Get Happy.”

In 1999, B*Witched released their sophomore album, “Awake and Breathe” which peaked at #5 on the UK Albums chart.

In the US, the album peaked at #91 on the Billboard 200 chart. In the UK, the album was certified Platinum and in the US, the album was certified Gold, despite charting low.

The first single from the album, “Jesse Hold On” peaked at #4 on the UK Singles chart, making it their first single not to top the chart. The song managed to peak at #6 on the Irish Singles chart.

The second single, “I Shall Be There” featuring African choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo, peaked at #13 on the UK Singles chart and #29 on the Irish Singles chart.

Their last single, “Jump Down” peaked at #16 on the UK Singles chart, making their lowest appearance on the chart. The song sold roughly 44,000 copies in the UK.

After touring Europe and North America where they co-headlined the “All That” Music & More Festival with music acts LFO and Blaque, B*Witched began working on a third album.

They recorded 3 new songs, “Hold On” (which was featured on the “Princess Diaries” soundtrack), a cover version of Toni Basil’s “Mickey” (which was featured on the “Bring it On” soundtrack), and “Play that Funky Music.”

The two latter songs were featured on their American EP, “Across America 2000” which was supposed to make a comeback in America.

B*Witched also guest-starred on the ABC soap opera, “General Hospital” in July of 2001.

B*Witched’s two new songs “Where Will You Go?” and “(To Be) Held in Your Arms” were scheduled for release in mid-2002 as part of their comeback in the UK, but they were dropped from their record label.

B*Witched had plans to sign to Telstar Records, but the deal fell through and after Sinead O’Carroll left the group, B*Witched disbanded in September of 2002.

After B*Witched broke up, Edele and Keavy Lynch continued working in the music business. Edele worked as a songwriter, writing songs for Girls Aloud and the Sugababes. Today, Edele is married with 3 children.

In 2006, Edele & Keavy reunited musically and performed under the name “Ms. Lynch.”

Now, the sisters formed a new band called “Barbarellas” and they released their debut album in April of 2011.

In 2006, Lindsay married Lee Brennan (of British boyband, 911) and joined the band, Clayton a year later. She also pursued acting.

On October 18, 2012, it was announced that B*Witched would reunite for an ITV2 series called “The Big Reunion” which features five other pop music groups. The show features each group telling their stories about the times in their respective groups before rehearsing together ahead of one major comeback at the Hammersmith Apollo.

The group had to hold “emotional clear the air” talks before they reformed. Edele had admitted that she & Sinead had a fall-out in 2006 and hadn’t spoken to each other since then.

Due to the success of “The Big Reunion,” they went on an arena tour around the United Kingdom & Ireland in May of 2013. They also joined music groups Atomic Kitten, Five, Honeyz, Liberty X and 911 for a Christmas party tour. The groups also got together to record a charity single “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday” for Text Santa.

In March of 2013, Lindsay announced that B*Witched would be recording new music. On May 4, 2013, they released a promotional single called “Love and Money” on YouTube.

On October 3, 2013, Edele announced in an interview with Today FM that the group was recording their third album. On December 11, 2013, they announced via PledgeMusic that their EP “Champagne or Guinness” would be released on September 28, 2014.
