Vanilla were a British pop music group from Barnet, London, England that consisted of sisters Frances & Alison Potter, Alida Swart and Sharon Selby. The group formed in 1996 and were signed to the EMI record label.
In 1997, they released their debut single, “No Way, No Way” (based on Piero Umilani’s 1968 song, “Mah Nà Mah Nà”) which peaked at #14 on the UK Singles chart, making it their only highest charting single to date. It also peaked at #24 on the music charts in New Zealand.

The music video for “No Way, No Way” won the title of “Worst Music Video Ever” on the 1997 ITV Chart show end-of-year special and was voted #26 on Channel 4’s “100 Worst Pop Records.”
The group’s follow-up single, “True to Us” peaked at #36 on the UK Singles chart which was their last chart appearance to date.

Vanilla promoted their singles by making appearances on television shows such as “Top of the Pops” and “Blue Peter.” They toured schools around the United Kingdom, were a minor act on the 1998 Disney Channel UK tour and were also regular participants on the Channel 4 morning program, “The Big Breakfast” as part of the show’s “Vanilla’s Thrillers” feature.

After their record deal with EMI came to an end, the group continued to perform together and made various appearances at London’s PopShow Party events where they performed a cover version of Nancy Sinatra’s 1965 song, “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’.”

One of their tracks, “Realise” won a public vote on the PopShow Party’s website and was available to stream online. According to research, Alison and Sharon continued to perform together as a duo while Frances formed a new music group called Northbound.

In 2011, Frances appeared on an episode of “Nevermind the Buzzcocks” on the identity parade segment. It was indicated that she was working on a dance music track, but it doesn’t appear to have ever been released.

In 2014, Alida Swart was interviewed for an article in The Guardian newspaper about the pitfalls of having a hit novelty record. It’s unknown what the members of Vanilla are currently up to these days and it seems as if they’ve faded into obscurity.
