Wandra

Wandra (real name Wandra Rawlins) was a female dance\R&B singer from the early ’80s. Not much information is given about this artist.
In 1983, she released her debut single “Love Attack” on Jamtu Records. It’s unknown how or if the single charted at all.
During that same year, Wandra released a follow-up single called “Sex Attack” on the THO record label. Like her previous single, it didn’t appear to chart at all.

After that, it seems as if Wandra has faded into obscurity. It’s unknown what she’s up to these days.

Pure Energy

Pure Energy was a dance music\post-disco music group that consisted of Curtis Hudson, Lisa Stevens, Raymond Hudson and Wade Hudson. Early on, Curtis, Raymond & Wade were playing in a band called The Professionals. After Lisa saw them perform at a club in Orange, New Jersey, the four of them formed a cover band.
In 1980, the group signed a record deal with Prism Records. During that same year, they released their self-titled (and only) album. It’s unknown how or if the album charted at all.
Their first single released from the album “Party On” became their first hit, peaking at #7 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music\Club Play Singles chart & managed to peak at #93 on Billboard’s Hot Soul Singles chart.
The follow-up single from the album “When You’re Dancing” peaked at #35 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music\Club Play Singles chart.
Another single from Pure Energy’s debut album “Come Closer” was released promotionally, but didn’t chart.
In 1982, Pure Energy released the single “Breakaway” which peaked at #20 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music\Club Play Singles chart.

During that same year, they released two more singles “Too Hot” (which peaked at #57 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music\Club Play Singles chart) and “You’ve Got the Power” (which peaked at #65 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music\Club Play Singles chart).

In 1983, Pure Energy released the singles “Love Game” (which peaked at #30 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music\Club Play Singles chart) and “Spaced Out” (which didn’t chart, but was listed in Billboard magazine’s “Top Singles Picks” in the “recommended” section).

During that same year, Lisa Stevens & Curtis Hudson wrote the song “Holiday” which was discovered by music producer Jellybean Benitez. It was offered to R&B singers Phyllis Hyman & Mary Wilson (of the Supremes), but they turned it down. The song was later given to Madonna which became a hit on the pop & dance music charts. They would later write another song for Madonna called “Spotlight.”
In 1984, Pure Energy released their last single to date “One Hot Night” which didn’t chart. After that, the group disbanded.

In 1986, Lisa & Curtis welcome a son named Eric, who has gone on to become a successful songwriter & producer, working with various artists such as Ne-Yo, Mariah Carey, Dr. Dre, John Legend, Mary J. Blige & Trey Songz.
In 1989, Lisa released a solo single called “Love That Music,” but it’s unknown how or if it charted at all.

These days, it’s unknown if Curtis & Lisa are still currently active in the music business, but they were interviewed in 2012 about the success of “Holiday.” It’s unknown what Raymond Hudson & Wade Hudson are up to these days.

Candi

Candi was a Canadian pop band from the late ’80s\early ’90s that consisted of lead singer Candita “Candy” Pennella, bassist & background vocalist Nino Milazzo, drummer & percussionist Paul Russo & keyboardist Rich Imbrogno.

The band originally performed as an Italian wedding band. They later began playing at local area clubs & dances where they attracted the attention of record executives from I.R.S. Records label who signed them to a record contract.
In 1988, Candi released their debut single “Dancing Under a Latin Moon” which peaked at #26 on the RPM Top Singles chart in Canada. In the United States, the song became the band’s only hit song to date, peaking at #68 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #46 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music\Club Play Singles chart.
During that same year, they released their self-titled debut album. It’s unknown how or if the album charted, but it was certified platinum in Canada (with sales of 100,000 units).
The band’s follow-up single “Under Your Spell” managed to peak at #46 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music\Club Play Singles chart. It’s unknown how it charted in Canada.
The third single released from the album “Missing You” peaked at #18 on the RPM Top Singles chart.
The last single from the album “Love Makes No Promises” became Candi’s highest charting single in Canada, peaking at #9 on the RPM Top Singles chart.

At the 1990 Juno Awards, Candi’s songs “Under Your Spell” & “Missing You” were nominated for the award of “Best Dance Recording”. Candy Pennella was nominated for the award of “Female Vocalist of the Year,” but she lost to Rita MacNeil. She was nominated the next year, but lost to Celine Dion.
In 1990, Candi changed their name to Candi & the Backbeat and released their sophomore album “World Keeps On Turning.” It’s unknown how or if the album charted at all, but it was certified Gold.
The only single to chart was “Friends Forever” which managed to peak at #38 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music\Club Play Singles chart in 1991.

The other two singles released from the album “The World Just Keeps On Turning” (which was nominated at the Juno Awards for “Best Dance Recording”) and “Good Together” didn’t appear to chart.

After a North American tour in 1991, Candy Pennella decided to disband the band and members went on to pursue other projects.

Candy married Paul Russo (who began working as a session musician), attended York University where she graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music, then attended the University of Toronto where she graduated in 1994, earning a Bachelor of Education degree. These days, she works as a teacher for the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

It’s unknown what Nino Milazzo & Rich Imbrogno are up to these days and it appears as if they have faded into obscurity.

Neva

Neva was a female dance\house music singer from the ’90s. Not much information is given about her, but she was signed to Warlock Records.
In 1996, she released her only single “Fascination.” It’s unknown how or if the single charted at all. After that, it seems as if Neva has faded into obscurity. It’s unknown what she is up to these days.

China Prynz

China Prynz (real name Frances Pryzbyl) was a female freestyle\dance singer from the 2000s. Not much information is given about her, but she was signed to High Power Records.
In 2000, she released her only single “C’est La Vie.” It’s unknown how or if the single made any music charts at all.

After that, it seems as if China Prynz has faded into obscurity. Nothing much has been heard from her since the 2000s.

The Beu Sisters

The Beu Sisters (born in New York City) are a pop music girl group that originally consisted of sisters Candice, Jilaine, Christie & Danielle. Their parents were Broadway veterans.

Born in New York, the sisters and their family moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida in 1989. In 1997, the sisters recorded a homemade demo. Outside of music, Candice is skilled in art (particularly in drawing & painting), Jiliane did costume design and Christie was a champion surfer.

By the end of the ’90s, they formed an a cappella music group and later opened for artists such as Billy Ray Cyrus, Bad Company, John Anderson & Daryle Singletary. They were later discovered by songwriter Desmond Child who helped sign them to a record deal with S-Curve Records.
In 2002, the Beu Sisters released their debut album, “Decisions”. It’s unknown how or if the album charted it all, but it received positive reception from critics.
The only single released from the album was “I Was Only (Seventeen).” Like the album, it’s unknown how or if the single made the music charts at all.

Throughout the early\mid-2000s, the Beu Sisters appeared on various movie & TV soundtracks such as “The Lizzie McGuire Movie,” “Home on the Range,” “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “Because of Winn Dixie,” “Gilmore Girls,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Smallville” and “Charmed.”

The group was also well-known on the Disney Channel, performing at Disney’s 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Hollywood Bowl & Disneymania In Concert.” They also opened for singers Kelly Clarkson & Clay Aiken on a 32-city tour.

The Beu Sisters later signed an entertainment deal with Sony\Columbia Records, but due to unknown delays, their deal didn’t pan out, so they decided to take a break from the music business. During their hiatus, the sisters found themselves waiting tables, teaching vocal lessons, gardening, cleaning homes and starting families of their own, but they still continued to perform music.

In 2012, the Beu Sisters (minus Jilaine) made a comeback to the music scene and released three EPs: “Beu-tiful” Volumes 1, 2 & 3.

These days, the sisters continue to perform together as a trio. According to a comment I received from one of the Beu Sisters, Candice back in May of 2017:

“Hello there….I’m a Beu Sister! Just wanted to say thank you for creating this for us. Just found it today as I was recounting tales from years gone by to my 9 yr old. This page had everything summarized so concisely. Very nice job. Wondering how you found us? Were you a former fan-friend? I’ve been in the process of writing a memoir & creating a little Indi documentary about my big show biz family’s time in the limelight. So nice to know that even in our obscurity our contributions to the music industry have not been completely lost or forgotten. Again, much appreciation, love & light to you -Candice Beu“)

The Vapors

The Vapors are a new wave\power pop band from Guildford, Surrey, England who were known in the United States for being a “one-hit wonder.” The line-up consisted of lead singer-songwriter & rhythm guitarist David Fenton, drummer Howard Smith, lead guitarist Edward Bazalgette (born in London, England) and bass guitarist & vocalist Steve Smith.

The band formed in 1978 when an early version of the band was discovered by Bruce Foxton (from punk rock band The Jam) playing at the Three Lions pub in Farncombe (located in Waverley, Surrey, England) and offered the band a few gigs & agreed to jointly manage them with John Weller (the father of English musician Paul Weller). After that, they were offered a slot supporting The Jam on the “Settling Sons” tour in 1979.
At the end of 1979, the Vapors signed a record deal with the United Artists record label and released their first single “Prisoners” which flopped on the charts.
In 1980, the band released their debut album “New Clear Days” which peaked at #44 on the U.K. Albums chart and #62 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Their second single “Turning Japanese” became a hit, peaking at #3 on the U.K. Singles chart and topping the music charts in Australia & Canada. In the United States, the song peaked at #36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #34 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music\Club Play Singles chart.

The song’s lyric content was believed to euphemistically refer to masturbation, but Dave Fenton (who wrote the song) denied that claim in an interview on VH1, but however, he said wished to thank whoever first came up with that interpretation.

The follow-up single “News at Ten” peaked at #44 on the U.K. Singles chart. The last single released from the album “Waiting for the Weekend” failed to chart.
In 1981, the Vapors released their second (and current to date) album “Magnets” which peaked at #109 on the Billboard Hot 100, #39 on the Canadian Albums chart, but missed the U.K. Albums chart.
Sales for the band’s follow-up album were poor and the only single to chart from the album was “Jimmie Jones” (which name-checked cult leader Jim Jones) which peaked at #44 on the U.K. Singles chart and managed to peak at #39 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

In 1982, the Vapors disbanded. According to Dave Fenton, he alleged in an interview with “Record Collector” magazine that the lack of support from their record label was the reason for the band’s break-up and that their seventh single “Red Flag” was cancelled without any explanation.

After the band broke up, Dave Fenton released a solo single in 1983 called “Fresh Air” on Razor Records, but it’s unknown how successful it was. In the early 1990s, he returned to the legal profession and spent the next 17 years in London as a in-house solicitor for the Musicians’ Union.

Meanwhile, Edward Bazalgette became a TV director, directing TV programs for the BBC such as “Doctor Who” and two BBC documentaries: “Genghis Khan” (in 2005) and “Hannibal: Rome’s Worst Nightmare” (in 2006).

Howard Smith ran an independent record shop called People Records in Guildford, Surrey, England which closed in 2016.

Steve Smith formed a music act called Shoot!Dispute in 1984. Later on, he began working in sound engineering and was even the resident engineer at venues such as The Barfly. He later became a member of music trio The Shakespearos.

In April of 2016, Dave Fenton, Ed Bazelgette & Steve Smith performed at the Half Moon in Putney, London, England and since then, it appears as if the band has reunited, but with Michael Bowes now playing drums instead of Howard Smith.

Caroline

Caroline was a female dance\electronic\house music artist from the ’90s. Not much information is given about her, but she was signed to the New Generation Records label.
